Dr. Viernes is a CHamoru scholar who has done extensive research and writing about the history of Sumay and the lingering impact of World War II on the displaced residents of Sumay and the formation of the postwar village of Santa Rita. Dr. Viernes will discuss how his work on Sumay transformed from a purely academic pursuit to one that has been translated into a range of media. He will also provide guidance to exploring possibilities for taking academic work “back to the village” in ways that serve islander communities and histories that inform scholarly work.
