Consisting of approximately 50 musicians, the III Marine Expeditionary Force (MEF) Band possesses diverse musical capabilities. Commonly recognized for its marching, the unit also performs as a wind ensemble, jazz combo, brass band, brass and woodwind quintets, and other smaller chamber ensembles. Because it is the only U. S. military band on Okinawa, the III MEF Band performs in over 300 commitments per year. Some of these events include parades, military and civilian ceremonies, formal concerts, Marine Corps Birthday Balls, and worldwide marching and concert festivals. Due to its high demand, the III MEF Band is highly proficient in a wide variety of settings thus making its musical vocabulary quite extensive; symphonic classics, modern literature, traditional marches, jazz & pop standards, and music from movies and stage productions are nothing out of the ordinary. Similarly, traditional Japanese music is often played due to the band’s location and involvement within the local community. As ambassadors of “Friendship through Music,” the unit frequently participates in community events that often involve Japanese citizens in the celebration of their culture.
